Generator safety

Generator safety basics: carbon monoxide precautions, safe outdoor placement, and why connections to home wiring need a qualified electrician.

Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning

Portable generators produce carbon monoxide, a gas you cannot see or smell. Operate them outdoors, at least 20 feet from windows, doors and vents. Never run one in a home, basement or garage. Use battery-powered or battery-backup CO alarms. See the CDC’s power-outage safety guidance.

Have connections assessed

Have a qualified electrician assess connections to building wiring and transfer equipment for your installation. Follow manufacturer instructions. A watt estimate cannot establish whether a cable, outlet, grounding arrangement or connection is suitable.

Planning only

Check running capability, starting capability and voltage separately. Whole-home systems need professional review. This calculator is not an installation design or an emergency response service.
